Accompanying the documentary film & theatre project THE CONGO TRIBUNAL, a comprehensive transmedia narrative has been created and exhibited at festivals, in museums and art spaces throughout Europe and beyond. As a result of an interdisciplinary collaboration of european and african artists, theatre- and filmmakers, digital creators and campaigners, the transmedia elements extend the dialectic space, offering new perspectives, stories and multiple artistic interpretations.

Created in collaboration with the Congolese political illustrator Kayene and the digital studio Monokel, the fully animated interactive narration WITNESS J tells the story of the directly affected from a victim’s perspective. In addition to this browser game, a room scale VR experience lets us undergo even more intensely the reality lived by the victims of the Congo war. An additional comprehensive online archive, consisting of the complete filmed material for “The Congo Tribunal”, enables the user to browse and edit the footage individually.

Furthermore, the installation version of this work, created in co-production with STUK, Leuven and STROOM, Den Haag, involves the full-length 26h screenings of the tribunal in Bukavu and Berlin, merged in a multi screen video installation. Supplemented by a variety of reading materials and a short documentary about the impact of the project in Congo during a nationwide symposia tour in Congo two years after the tribunal, the installation hints at the long-tail impact of this grand work.
