The jury of the German Documentary Film Award met via video conference. Twelve productions were nominated for the main award from almost 90 entries. We are very glad to announce that THE NEW GOSPEL is among the great selection of documentaries.

Together with the Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (MFG), SWR has been awarding the German Documentary Film Award (previously the Baden-Württemberg Documentary Film Award) since 2009, since 2017 as part of the annual SWR Doku Festival.

The awarding of the German Documentary Film Award will also be presented online again on the evening of June 18, 2021.

The New Gospel was selected for the IDFA Competition for Feature-Length Documentary

We are very glad to announce that THE NEW GOSPEL by multi-award-winning director Milo Rau was selected for the Feature-Length Documentary Competition of the International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in Amsterdam. This year the festival takes place from November 18 to December 6 in person and online. Twelve films by some of the world’s leading filmmakers are selected for the IDFA Competition for Feature-Length Documentary. The selection includes giants of documentary film, but also theater and visual art. With strong artistic concepts and bold formalist approaches, each title displays the mark of an auteur, from hybrid films to cinéma vérité.

With THE NEW GOSPEL, Milo Rau and his team return to the origins of the gospel and stage it as the passion play of a whole population. In Matera, southern Italy, where the great Jesus films from Pasolini to Gibson were shot, a cast of refugees and unemployed peasants are in search of a rewriting of the gospel with its original spirit. A New Gospel for the 21st Century emerges: A manifesto of solidarity of the poorest, a cinematic revolt for a more just, humane world.

"THE NEW GOSPEL" CELEBRATES ITS PREMIERE IN VENICE!

Milo Rau's film will be screened at the "Giornate degli Autori" at Venice IFF.

What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would his apostles be? With "The New Gospel" Milo Rau and his team return to the origins of the gospel and stage it as a passion play for an entire population. Together with Yvan Sagnet, a former farm worker and activist from Cameroon, Milo Rau creates a new gospel for the 21st century: A manifesto of solidarity for the poorest, a cinematic uprising for a fairer, more humane world.

Numerous refugees, activists and citizens of Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019 have participated in the film, as well as Marcello Fonte (European Film Prize for Best Actor 2018), Enrique Irazoqui (actor of Jesus in Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Il Vangelo secondo Matteo"), Maia Morgenstern (actress of Mary in Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ") and the singer-songwriter Vinicio Capossela.

Yvan Sagnet, born 1985 in Douala (Cameroon), came to Italy in 2008 to study, where he initially earned his living as a farmhand. In 2011 he was the spokesman for the agricultural workers' strike in Nardò (Puglia), which led to the first trial in Europe for slavery and the conviction of twelve entrepreneurs for "caporalato" (mafia-like structures). Sagnet was knighted by the Italian Republic and is the founder of the international anti-Caporalato association NO-CAP.

Milo Rau, born 1977 in Bern (CH), is a director, author and, since the season of 2018/19, the artistic director of NTGent (Belgium) . Critics call him the "most influential" (Die Zeit), "most awarded" (Le Soir), "most interesting" (De Standaard), "most controversial" (La Repubblica), "most scandalous" (New York Times) or "most ambitious" (The Guardian) artist of our time. Since 2002 he has published over 50 plays, films, books and actions.

In "The New Gospel", Sagnet and Rau together create a biblical story that could hardly be more topical in terms of the background of the refugee crisis in Europe and the worldwide Black Lives Matter movement. With the "Revolt of Dignity", they have created a political campaign that campaigns for decent living and working conditions for refugees and mostly illegal farm workers in Italy.

Director Milo Rau says about the film: "For me, the important thing was not only to adapt the word of the Bible, but its content: the fight of all men for dignity. In that sense, „The New Gospel“ has indeed become a biblical film adaptation for our times with a cast that is diverse in the best sense: Next to international stars and politicians, activists, agricultural workers and normal citizens play the leading roles. Mary Magdalene is a leading figure in our film, some of the apostles are female and - for the most part - the followers of "our" Jesus are of Muslim faith. But what makes me most happy is that our film has made a real effect. As a consequence of the "Revolt of Dignity", as you can see at the end of the film, the first "houses of dignity" were founded around Matera: Houses where the previously homeless protagonists of our film can now live in dignity and self-determination. And this with the support of the Catholic Church!"

His companion and Jesus actor Yvan Sagnet says: "When man loses his dignity, he becomes an animal, an object. So the "Revolt of Dignity" is about man's effort to remain human. Everyone who stands up for his own dignity and well-being fights for the dignity and well-being of all people. Thus the sentence in the gospels can be understood on a religious level. But we can also go a step further and say: We cannot stop condemning the injustices of the world. Because if we lose this ability, we fall into barbarism. We live in times when we can no longer afford to do nothing. We must unite to fight together against the advance of evil - the demon, to use another term from the Bible."

"The New Gospel" is a German-Swiss-Italian co-production and was produced by Fruitmarket, Langfilm and the IIPM - International Institute of Political Murder in co-production with Matera 2019, ZDF in cooperation with Arte, Swiss Television SRF / SRG, Consorzio Teatri Uniti di Basilicata and Teatro di Roma. The film and the associated theatre project were supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the Federal Cultural Foundation, the European Cultural Foundation, the Zurich Film Foundation, the Federal Office of Culture (BAK), the Canton of St. Gallen Cultural Promotion, the Volkart Foundation, the Cultural Fund Suissimage and the German Film Fund.

Producers of the film are Arne Birkenstock, Olivier Zobrist and Sebastian Lemke, Thomas Eirich- Schneider is responsible for the camera, Katja Dringenberg for editing and Marco Teufen and Guido Keller for sound. The set design and costumes are by Anton Lukas and the music by Elia Redinger and the famous Italian singer-songwriter Vinicio Capossela.

"The New Gospel" will be premiered as a special event in the framework of the Giornate degli Autori. Director, actors and team will be present and available for interviews. The exact screening dates will be announced soon by the Giornate degli Autori.

The Moscow Trials now on MUBI.com

The MUBI-Special Who Owns the Truth? shows a number of documentary films shown at DOK Leipzig, one of the world’s most important stages for documentary film.

After this year's symposium, which questioned the role of truth in today's non-fiction cinema, they present a series of documentaries that have been premiering at the festival in recent years. These stories respond in their own way to the unstable and changing current political climate. Every single one of these films is characterized by a unique and always attentive approach, with which you can try the time in which we live on the slip.

The Moscow Trials directed by Milo Rau and produced by Fruitmarket Art & Media GmbH traces the story of a state and church staged campaign against uncomfortable artists - with the means of political theater. A courtroom is being set up in the Sakharov center of Moscow, where the "Caution, Religion" exhibition, which was destroyed in 2003, is being held. In a staged show trial with the most important exponents of the Russian cultural struggle, "art" appears against "religion", the "dissident" against "true" Russia.

On the stage are not actors, but actors from the real, political life: professional lawyers, a constitutional judge, witnesses and experts of all political circles. In the style of an open-ended court drama, in cross-examination, pleading and the arguments at the edge of the process, a disturbing and contradictory picture of today's Russia emerges: Does Putin's cultural policy violate freedom of expression and human rights? Or is it the art that violates the feelings of the faithful? Who is the attacker, who is the defender?

Shooting for „Century of Women“ in India and Cuba

The shooting for the Indian and Cuban episode of „Century of Women“, directed by Uli Gaulke has been completed. In India we shot with the incredible Lady Nanammal Ama. Nanammal is the worlds oldest yoga teacher. She has been teaching yoga to around one million people around the globe and she is not tired of continuing her lessons.

In Cuba, our protagonist is the 104-year old astonishing oral story teller Haydée Artega. Haydée started telling tales when she was in her twenties this was in 1935! Her stories are wonderfully poetic and about the simple things in life but which have a great truth in them.

FINANCING CLOSED FOR „POL POT DANCING“ BY ENRIQUE SÁNCHEZ LANSCH AND „THE NEW GOSPEL“ BY MILO RAU.

Langfilm and Up North Film, our friends from Norway and Switzerland helped to close financing for two of our productions.

With the positive funding decision of the Swiss Bundesamt für Kultur for our partners from Langfilm, Milo Rau and his team can start with the production of “The New Gospel”, which will be filmed between July and October 2019 in Matera (Italy).  What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would his disciples be? With THE NEW GOSPEL, Milo Rau and his team return to the origins of the gospel and stage it as the passion play of a whole population. A New Gospel for the 21st Century emerges: A manifesto of solidarity of the poorest, a cinematic revolt for a more just, humane world.

Enrique Sánchez Lansch will start shooting in Cambodia next March. We are happy to announce that financing is closed. After the Norwegian Film Institute, the Fritt Ord Foundation will also support our partners from Up North Film for our coproduction “Pol Pot Dancing”. Enrique Sánchez Lansch tells this thrilling story of the horrible culture war combining choreographies with never seen archive material and interviews with eywitnesses: In the royal palace of Cambodia, a dancer raises a boy like he was one of her own. Decades later, under the force of the Khmer Rouge, she discovers that her foster son is none other than Pol Pot.

Both films are coproduced as a “Grand Format” by ZDF in cooperation with ARTE. Milo Rau’s “THE NEW GOSPEL”  already received support by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Zürcher Filmstiftung, Deutscher Filmförderfonds, Kanton St.Gallen Kulturförderung / Swisslos, BKM, GEA – Waldviertler, Stadt Lausanne und Kanton Waadt. Enrique Sánchez Lansch „POL POT DANCING“ has been supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the BKM and the NFI.
