PREPARATORY FUNDING FOR NEW PROJECT BY MILO RAU AND FOR A FILM ABOUT GUANTANAMO DETAINEE MOHAMMEDOU OULD SLAHI

In its most recent meeting, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW has funded the development and preparation of two Fruitmarket productions with a total of 95,000 euros. Milo Rau receives funding of 45,000 euros for the preparation of his next feature film "DAS MASSAKER". The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW was already on board as a major financing partner for his productions "The Moscow Trials", "The Congo Tribunal" and "The New Gospel". These films screened in Locarno, Venice, Leipzig and Amsterdam and received nominations for the Swiss and German Film Awards, the German Documentary Film Award, and the Edimotion editing prize. The New Gospel was awarded the Swiss Film Prize in 2020.

For the project "GUANTANAMO DIARY" Fruitmarket was able to secure the participation of Mohamed Ould Slahi and the exclusive rights to his story. GUANTANAMO DIARY tells the unique story behind the world bestseller of the same name and Guantanamo's highest priority detainee number one - Mohamedou Ould Slahi. The documentary traces his 14-year captivity and follows the personal encounters and world political events that led to his spectacular abduction. We will exclusively follow Mohamedou during his newly gained freedom to travel as he confronts friends and family members who testified against him or who got him into the crossfires of the secret service. We also show his attempt to prove his innocence through legal and political means. One question in particular runs through the entire documentary: What role did Mohamedou Slahi really play in the attacks of 9/11? The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW supports the development of „GUANTANAMO DIARY“ with 40,000 euros.
